The 197-cell field is the home page's hero graphic. It is real data, it is interactive, and it is the largest block of texture on the page — data as ornament. This card runs the live component: hover, focus or click a register chip below to isolate it; Escape clears a lock.
A mention is a keyword match on a case term — not a verified substantive discussion. The pipeline surfaces where records mention the same case; it does not assert that they are connected. Corpus scan verified 2026-07-15.
| Rule | How the source does it |
|---|---|
| Fills, never outlines | Every cell, bar and swatch is a solid fill. A hollow chart reads as a wireframe placeholder in this system. |
| Volume orders the ramp | Largest source group gets the darkest step. --reg-1 #14572f (n=70) → --reg-6 #b3cdb8 (n=5). |
| One hue break, and it means something | --reg-7 amber #a8781f is the county auditor property source group — the only non-green in any chart. |
| Residual is --mist | "7 other source groups" (n=16) sits at the pale end so it never competes with a named source. |
| Isolation, not deletion | Unselected cells drop to opacity .13 and matches scale to 1.18. The denominator stays visible. |
| Every count is stated | The legend prints n on every chip; the caption states what a "mention" is and is not. |
| Requirement | Implementation |
|---|---|
| Non-visual equivalent | Container is role="img" with a full breakdown in aria-label. |
| No-JS equivalent | <noscript> prints the same breakdown as prose. |
| Failure equivalent | If zero cells render, the script removes role and swaps in a plain-text pointer to the case file. It never shows an empty box. |
| Every input | Chips are real buttons bound to hover, focus, mouseleave, blur and click. |
| State exposure | Locked chip carries aria-pressed="true"; Escape unlocks. |
| Reduced motion | Transitions collapse to ~0ms; the field is fully readable without any animation. |
The two other data primitives. A split bar is always labelled on both sides with the total stated; a count-up always lands on a real figure and prints it instantly under reduced motion.
